Soil preparation

The soil in your hop garden is another critical factor in the success of your vines. Your hop yard should have a 2-foot depth of good, workable soil. Ideally, you should locate an area with a sandy loam — a loose and workable soil that will stay well drained during the growing season. Test your soil prior to planting your vines to determine the nutrient qualities that naturally occur and what types of fertilizers can be added. Avoid more saline (salty) or alkaline (high pH) soils, or your vines will grow poorly and have limited production. Most hops grow the best in a soil with a pH of 6 to 7.5. Your vines will need nitrogen, potassium, phosphorus, calcium, boron, zinc, molybdenum, and phosphate. Without the proper amount of nutrients, your vines’ growth will become stunted, and your plants will take on a pale color.

Using good compost will provide your hops with all of the nutrients it should need. You should spread compost about 3 inches (8 centimeters) thick over the hop hills before planting, and you should not need to add many nutrients afterward.

The following chart can be used not only for altering the pH in the soil for hops, but also can be used for all the plants in your beer garden. Each of these soil additives can be purchased at a well-stocked hardware or garden supply store.
