Autumn Olive

They are those recent immigrant, highly invasive, hedgerow plants growing 10 to 15 feet high, the leaves in the wind dark green atop, silver underneath, berries red and juicy, maturing in late summer–autumn olive (Elaeagnus umbellata). Despite its bold spread, it is a beautiful plant, providing a ruby-red jelly and abundant ascorbic acid–rich speckled berries you can strip off quickly. The flowers in spring are a light yellow. Birds and deer love the berries, and so might you. They provide vitamins A, C, and E, as well as lesser amounts of many minerals. Some sources say they have seventeen times more lycopene than ripe tomatoes. Russian olives, of the same family, have dry useless berries. That is the way to tell the difference between the plants.
