The fishbowl format is flexible enough to work in class or online in synchronous video-conferencing sessions. Teachers can facilitate a fishbowl discussion with the entire class in a whole-group rotation or with a smaller group at the teacher-led station as part of a station rotation lesson. The fishbowl format provides a clear structure for learners, which can ease the anxiety associated with engaging in rapid-fire, real-time conversations. It also encourages a high degree of intentionality because each circle—inner and outer—has a clear task. Students are either focused on adding to the discussion in a meaningful way as part of the inner circle or listening to the discussion and thinking critically about what their peers are saying as part of the outer circle.
