In flight, the black and white of the Pied Wagtail is very striking. The two white wing bars contrast markedly with the dark wings and wholly black upperparts. The white outer tail feathers and the gleaming white underparts are obvious. It has an awkward undulating flight, often calling with a high-pitched ‘chiz-zik’ or ‘seel-vit’.

The male White Wagtail (left) differs from the Pied Wagtail in showing an entirely pale silvery-grey back and rump, which contrast strongly against the black of the nape. Female Whites resemble the male, except for a duller back and less black on the head.
