When Rising above Is Not an Option: The Invisibility Response

Some practices we learn as children place us on our pathway to a fulfilling life. Other practices hold us down. Let’s look at a childhood practice that does not lift us up. Keep in mind that even unhappy survival practices offer us second chances to learn another way.

The world outside is full of wonder and beauty and learning. We have many hills to climb and skills to master, even from the youngest age. How painful it is to see children who cannot explore outside safely. If a bullet is zinging over his head or a drug deal is taking place in the alley beside the church, how can a child be free to learn?

I am forever grateful to have been somehow protected as I explored alone for hours in the forests on the hillsides. The benefit of having been neglected was that I could wander and play to my heart’s content, learning and happy much of the time. But because my sanctuaries were outside of me, I could not always reach them in time.

Trouble was, what took place behind locked doors and closed curtains was the opposite of sanctuary. When violence in my family’s world imploded out of control on a cold night, I couldn’t run to my Old Oak Tree. I could not climb up and out to the orchard. Instead, like many children who grow up in threatening environments, I held my breath until I felt invisible.
