Chapter Twenty-Eight

Tane and his mother watched the movie in silence. From the moment it started, he was pulled into the story, the heart-wrenching tale of a woman named Amelia waiting for her love to return from war. He had been forced to leave suddenly, and he’d left roses on her doorstep at midnight with a note promising to come home as soon as he could. When she could wait no longer, she went after him, deep into the thick of battle. With every passing scene, it appeared less likely she would find him, that he was even alive.

When, against all odds and after risking her own life, Amelia managed to save the man she loved and three of his fellow soldiers from a prisoner-of-war camp, a deeply haunting song filled the room. The low, raspy voice sang in the background as Joshua, played by Taylor Livingstone, took Amelia’s face in his hands and kissed her and then the credits began to roll. That had to be the song his mother had referred to, the one that won the Academy Award. “What did you say the name of this song was?”

His mother blinked as though he’d called her back from somewhere far away. Tane had been completely lost in what was happening on the screen himself. Especially the scenes with Ophelia, who was even more breathtaking in this period piece than online, if possible. It wasn’t so much her beauty, though, as her presence, the way she bared her heart and soul to the audience—to him, it felt like—holding nothing back. Tane literally had to remind himself to breathe several times as he watched her.

A tear glistened on his mother’s cheek. “It’s called ‘Found’. Très belle, non?”

“Very beautiful, yes.” And perfect for the movie, not only because Ophelia’s character found the man she was searching for, but, even more, because she found herself and discovered what she was capable of.

His mother swiped the tear away with her fingers. “What made you think to watch a movie of hers tonight? Was it because of what happened earlier today?”

His eyes narrowed. “What do you mean? What happened?”

“Someone with a knife tried to rob her. You did not see that online? It’s everywhere.”

Panic gripped him, but Tane worked to keep it off his face. No way he was discussing his relationship with his mother’s favorite movie star tonight. Especially since it wasn’t going anywhere. Which didn’t mean the idea of anything happening to Lia wasn’t sending icy waves rippling through him. “Is she okay?” Despite his best efforts, his voice trembled, and his mother shot him the same funny look she’d given him when he’d asked if Roses at Midnight was any good.

“She’s fine. After refusing to give the guy anything, she pushed his hand away and told him to get the knife out of her face. He recognized her then and took off. It was amazing. Like a real-life movie.”

“Ah.” The word came out raspy, and Tane cleared his throat. “Sounds impressive.”

“She is.” His mother pursed her lips.
