As if this needed saying! Legally it does. But obviously once the give way vessel ALWAYS the give way vessel.

Note Regarding Rule 17 – Rule 17 is what I term the shall – may – shall rule.

Shall maintain course and speed initially

May take action by her manoeuvre alone as soon as it become apparent the give way vessel is taking no action.

Shall take action to best aid to avoid Collision if it cannot be avoided by the give way vessel alone.
