NONTRADITIONAL STUDENTS
Graduate students, married students, older returning studentsâsome live off campus but some do actually live in dorms. If youâre a nontraditional student looking for a social life, then a dorm may be a great place for you to live; cheaper and more convenient. Many schools offer graduate dorms tailored just for grad students or married students. Other times, youâre mixed in with everyone else. If youâre coming to graduate school with the intention of working hard and focusing primarily on your work with few interruptions, then an apartment off campus may work better.
If youâre living near a nontraditional student, be open to learning from them. Instead of just thinking of them as the resident grown-up to ignore, ask them about their work experiences, their life experiences. Itâs a heads-up of whatâs to come for you.
I went into graduate school as a single woman having been in the work world for two years postcollege, so I was still young and looking to meet new friends. My closest friends during my two years in graduate school were from the dorm. I met people from around the country and the world who were studying and doing research in a wide variety of areas. Living in the dorm gave me access to these people that I wouldnât have had if I lived on my own off campus and just met people through my own graduate program. Having the meal plan gave me a great opportunity to get to know people and to relax after a busy day of classes.
âDeborah Wachenheim, former grad student in the dorms of Harvard University (MA)
