CHAPTER 11
wendyâs story
âListen, then,â said Wendy, settling down to her story, with Michael at her feet and seven boys in the bed. âThere was once a gentleman âââ â
âI had rather he had been a lady,â Curly said.
âI wish he had been a white rat,â said Nibs.
âQuiet,â their mother admonished them. âThere was a lady also, andââ
âO Mummy,â cried the first twin, âyou mean that there is a lady also, donât you? She is not dead, is she?â
âOh, no.â
âI am awfully glad she isnât dead,â said Tootles. âAre you glad, John?â
âOf course I am.â
âAre you glad, Nibs?â
âRather.â
âAre you glad, Twins?â
âWe are just glad.â
âOh dear,â sighed Wendy.
âLittle less noise there,â Peter called out, determined that she should have fair play, however beastly a story it might be in his opinion.
âThe gentlemanâs name,â Wendy continued, âwas Mr Darling, and her name was Mrs Darling.â
âI knew them,â John said, to annoy the others.
âI think I knew them,â said Michael rather doubtfully.
âThey were married, you know,â explained Wendy, âand what do you think they had?â
âWhite rats,â cried Nibs, inspired.
âNo.â
âItâs awfully puzzling,â said Tootles, who knew the story by heart.
âQuiet, Tootles. They had three descendants.â
âWhat is descendants?â
âWell, you are one, Twin.â
âDo you hear that, John? I am a descendant.â
âDescendants are only children,â said John.
âOh dear, oh dear,â sighed Wendy. âNow, these three children had a faithful nurse called Nana; but Mr Darling was angry with her and chained her up in the yard; and so all the children flew away.â
âItâs an awfully good story,â said Nibs.
âThey flew away,â Wendy continued, âto the Neverland, where the lost children are.â
âI just thought they did,â Curly broke in excitedly. âI donât know how it is, but I just thought they did.â
âO Wendy,â cried Tootles, âwas one of the lost children called Tootles?â
âYes, he was.â
âI am in a story. Hurrah, I am in a story, Nibs.â
âHush. Now, I want you to consider the feelings of the unhappy parents with all their children flown away.â
âOo!â they all moaned, though they were not really considering the feelings of the unhappy parents one jot.
âThink of the empty beds!â
âOo!â
âItâs awfully sad,â the first twin said cheerfully.
âI donât see how it can have a happy ending,â said the second twin. âDo you, Nibs?â
âIâm frightfully anxious.â
âIf you knew how great is a motherâs love,â Wendy told them triumphantly, âyou would have no fear.â She had now come to the part that Peter hated.
âI do like a motherâs love,â said Tootles, hitting Nibs with a pillow. âDo you like a motherâs love, Nibs?â
âI do just,â said Nibs, hitting back.
âYou see,â Wendy said complacently, âour heroine knew that the mother would always leave the window open for her children to fly back by; so they stayed away for years and had a lovely time.â
âDid they ever go back?â
âLet us now,â said Wendy, bracing herself for her finest effort, âtake a peep into the futureâ; and they all gave themselves the twist that makes peeps into the future easier. âYears have rolled by; and who is this elegant
