WHAT YOU’VE ACCOMPLISHED
By going through your script and simply making better use of a character’s agenda and strategy, you’ve revived flat scenes and brought out strong personal moments.
The Dialogue Pass
At the time that I’m writing this, the H1N1 virus is sweeping the country. Last week, I received a letter from my kids’ elementary school telling me that “now is the time to panic.” So I did. I mean, I read a lot of end-of-the-world scripts, and if my school is telling me that now’s the time to panic, I’m listening! It wasn’t until the next day that they corrected the letter with another letter saying that they meant to write “now is the time NOT to panic.”
All this to say that one word alone can change everything.
When rewriting the dialogue of your script, you’ll find that it’s sometimes the smallest change — a deleted word or an additional line — that completely changes a scene. Here we’ll explore a number of ways to finesse the dialogue in your scenes and make what’s said — or not said — a compelling read.
