LOSE THIS SKIN

(Tymon Dogg)

By the time you’ve committed to a triple album, you’re already in the realms of madness, so why not start your fifth side with a previously released recording credited to another artist? Tymon Dogg’s ‘Lose This Skin’ had been recorded with Strummer, Jones, Headon, Gallagher and Watt-Roy as backing band at Electric Ladyland in New York, and then released as a single on Dogg’s own label during the summer. Its re-appearance on Sandinista! suggests either an eventual scarcity of tracks to fill the self-determined quota, or a determination to promote Dogg on the back of the group’s own significant clout.

‘Lose This Skin’ stands out as a significant musical diversion even for Sandinista!, but its violin-led ramshackle folk arrangement, and Dogg’s gypsy whine, have a distinct charm, and it’s a better song than many that follow. Dogg, who had known Strummer as a house-mate and busking partner since 1971, would eventually join Joe’s post-Clash group The Mescaleros.
