Figure 61. Phenylacetaldehyde molecule

Tollens’ Test: Place 2 ml of Phenylacetaldehyde in a test tube and add 2 ml of a 5% solution of silver nitrate and a few drops of 0.1 M sodium hydroxide solution. Then add, drop by drop, a dilute solution of ammonium hydroxide solution while constantly shaking. Some elemental silver will begin to show in the solution as evidence of the presence of an aldehyde. RCHO + Ag20 → 2Ag + RCOOH

Schiff’s Test: Place 2 ml of Phenylacetaldehyde in a test tube and add a few drops of Schiff’s Reagent. A brilliant magenta appears as proof of an aldehyde.
