The Chronicle of Higher Education Recommendations

Ken Bain (2004:B7) studied sixty professors from various disciplines and created his own list of practices that make teachers great. Bain asked, “What do any of the best professors do to encourage students to achieve remarkable learning results?” He especially found that they “create a natural learning environment (and) ask probing and insightful questions (which was) by far the most important principle.”

In emphasizing questions, Bain found that “an intriguing question or problem is the first (element) that makes up a good learning environment.” He emphasized “guidance in helping students understand the significance of the question.” He found that great teachers “embed the discipline’s issues in broader concerns, often taking an interdisciplinary approach.” Bain found that great teachers “remind students how the current question relates to some large issue that already interests them.” They “engage students in some higher-order intellectual activity” and “help students help themselves answer the question.” Finally, Bain observes that the great teachers “leave students wondering: What’s the next question? and What can we ask now?”
