15. Instructions

Good instructions often make the difference between a successful activity and complete chaos. Especially as a newer teacher, it’s really worth planning your instructions in advance, particularly for a complex activity, and even rehearsing them.

Preparation

Think carefully about what you’re going to explain when. Try not to give students too much information at once. If an activity has several stages, just give instructions one stage at a time.

Think about the language you use, and keep it simple (see grading your language). Instructions should be graded a bit lower than other teacher talk, as it’s essential that they’re understood. But don’t make it unnatural, and don’t bark out orders. You’re providing a model for students, so use simple but polite language.
