The future USS Strong (DD-467) takes shape on the ways at Bath Iron Works (BIW). Hull number 193 was among the first six of an eventual 31 2,100-ton Fletcher-class destroyers constructed by the Maine shipbuilder, and by the time Hugh Miller first saw his new ship it had been under construction for 366 days. Following its launching on May 17, 1942, Strong was moved to BIW’s fitting-out basin for completion. Seen here tied up inboard of sister ship Chevalier (DD-451), Strong has not yet received the gun turrets, torpedo tubes, and 20mm and 40mm cannon that will turn it into a lethal ship of war.
