Herman jumped up in the air. “She’s a liar! Those were never in my bag!”

Polly advanced toward him. “Oh, so you were hiding the loot someplace else and then put it in your bag?”

“That’s not what he’s saying at all,” said Felix. “But I hope this doesn’t mean you’ll never go out with me.”

“I’m saying I never stole those things!” Herman insisted.

Miss Calloway hand her hands on her hips. “Then how do you explain them being in your bag?”

“They weren’t in my bag! They were probably behind her back this whole time!”

Miss Calloway scratched her chin. “Why would this young lady say they were in your bag if they weren’t?”

Gertie jumped in. “Because she’s evil! And worse, she loves English! Need I say more?”

Charlotte put a hand on Gertie’s arm. “Miss Calloway, there’s no way you can be certain whether Polly is telling the truth or whether she’s lying in order to get Herman in trouble. But I’ll give you a little hint: she’s lying to get Herman in trouble.”

“I am not lying!” Polly shrieked. She looked up at Coach Carter for help, but he didn’t say anything.

Miss Calloway sighed. “I’m afraid I don’t have enough information to act,” she said. “Young lady, if you had your suspicions, you should have alerted me first. Then I could have looked in his bag. As it is, we really can’t be certain who’s telling the truth.” She shook her head. “You kids have one full day left here in Forgotten. I suggest you behave, because I will be watching you.” She turned to Polly. “All of you.”

Miss Calloway, Polly, and Coach Carter left the bunkhouse. And just as they were walking through the door, Stanley noticed it.

Coach Carter’s shoes.

They were covered in mud.
