Chapter Thirteen: An Unexpected Welcome

As Daphne and Mrs. Turner followed the sidewalk into the resort, someone rushed from the doors of the main building and ran up the sidewalk toward them. Daphne couldn’t tell who it was at first in the dark of evening, but once he was about fifty feet away, his identity was unmistakable.

It was Cam.

“You came back!” he shouted, happily.

Daphne and Mrs. Turner exchanged looks of confusion.

“I didn’t think you would!” he cried out as he got closer. “Dr. Gray and Dr. Rose nailed it. I can’t believe it!”

As soon as he reached them, he hugged his mom and then lifted Daphne—backpack and all—into the air. Cam lost his footing from the weight and they both fell back on their bottoms, Cam laughing with glee.

“I can’t believe you came back!” He jumped to his feet and whisked Daphne in his arms, her pack remaining in a heap on the sidewalk. “You passed the test.” He pointed to the sky. “You see that? She passed the test!”

Daphne realized he was pointing to the cameras and talking to the watchers.

“Now you get to come with me to the planning room,” he said.

“Cameron, what in the world are you talking about?” his mother asked when Daphne couldn’t speak.

Daphne was utterly bewildered.

Cam set Daphne down on her feet and put an arm around his mother’s neck. “Don’t you worry about a thing, Mom. You just go get yourself checked in. They’ll put you back in the same unit. And Daphne will be just on the other side, in twelve, where Brock was. I’ll meet you in an hour for dinner. Come on.”

He picked up Daphne’s pack and carried it as they continued to the main building. When they entered the lobby, a crowd of the regulars were there waiting with smiles and applause.

“Welcome back!” Stan called.

“Way to go, Daphne!” Dave said.

“Oh, my God.” Greg rushed up and gave her a hug. “I’m so relieved. I feel like everything was my fault.”

Daphne was at a loss. She had no idea what in the heck was going on.

As someone helped Mrs. Turner check in at the front desk, Daphne was whisked into the elevator.

“What’s happening?” she finally asked, once she and most of the younger crowd were in the elevator going up. She didn’t even have time to be afraid or anxious about the elevator; she was too freaked out by everyone’s mysterious behavior.

“You’ve made it to the next level, kiddo,” Stan explained with a wink. “The fact that you came back, in spite of everything you were led to believe, means you are dedicated to our mission, whether you know it or not.”

“That makes you a planner,” Cam said. “Like us.”

Holy moly. They wanted to make her a Caliban?

Still dazed, she followed them from the elevator onto the second floor, where they passed all three doctors’ offices and took a turn down another long corridor.

At the end of it, Stan opened the double doors, saying “Welcome to the planning room.”

Inside was a
