Depending on the context, it might also be helpful to let the person know that you identify with an emotion he or she is feeling.

You can use the 4 (or 5) Ls for more than just mitigating conflict. Use the process to empathize in moments when you normally get grumpy—at staff meetings, for instance. When a colleague goes on a tangent about the dress code, I try to run through the process, which goes something like this:

Label: She might feel isolated because she senses that she's the only one upholding the handbook rules.

Link: I've felt similar isolation when I hold kids accountable for tardiness and they gripe, "Other teachers don't make a huge deal about this!"

Listen: I should probably at least listen to her thoughts before I judge.

Let go: Sure, I'd like to go home now; but in the grand scheme, this two-minute tirade won't ruin my day.
