Herb Garden for Cooking

If your child tends a few herbs in a small garden near your kitchen door, you will be creating a simple and satisfying connection between the garden and the food we eat.

What You’ll Need

a sunny spot outdoors, easily accessible

a variety of herb plants, such as oregano, thyme, basil, parsley, mint, and lemon balm

What to Do

1 Go with your child to a nursery or garden center and select a variety of small herb plants.

2 Encourage her to rub the leaves of each plant very gently. Encourage her to describe each fragrance and think about what it reminds her of. She will probably identify the mint with toothpaste or gum, the oregano with pizza, and the lemon balm with lemonade.

3 Help her transplant the plants into a sunny corner of your yard. Most herbs require minimal care and will grow in almost any sunny location. Many of them grow back year after year, and the more you pick, the more they grow!

4 For cooking, you can use herbs either fresh or dried. Ask your child to pick some oregano, some parsley, and some basil the next time you are making spaghetti sauce. Add a sprig of mint to a glass of lemonade. Growing herbs offers a satisfying entry point into understanding where our food comes from.
