THE BIG QUESTIONS OF LIFE

Accompanying a child or adolescent in their philosophical explorations can be an essential part of psychotherapy, something adolescents especially miss greatly. As Miller remarked correctly, ‘Adolescents are profoundly spiritual, but nobody talks to them about their experiences’ (Miller 2015, p.61). Keeping the questioning alive and open can be more important than providing answers. These enlivening thought experiments about deep matters of existence are truly spiritual – at any age. Even very young children pose questions and deal with the big questions of life, as the example of a preschool child shows:

Julian is a four-year-old boy, who was presented because of disruptive behaviour in kindergarten. He is very intelligent and inquisitive. One day, he asked his mother, ‘Mum, when you die, will you remember that you had me as your child?’ This question preoccupied him for many days.
