Driving home Sunday night, Wyatt still couldn’t believe he’d won. His first rodeo back, and he’d done it. It almost felt wrong, winning after Cash’s death. But he’d promised Laura and Brady, and even though he didn’t much like the idea of celebrating, it seemed right to be doing it for them. It wasn’t that he’d ever considered quitting, but he had to be honest, he didn’t have the same drive to win that he once had. Some might call him foolish, considering this was the thing he’d worked for his whole life. Being in the rodeo was all he had ever wanted to do, but there was no sweetness in his victory.

What people didn’t realize about his friendship with Cash was that in some ways, Cash was the rodeo to him. Every memory he had of being in the rodeo was all about his relationship with Cash. As much as he loved the thrill of the win, it felt empty without Cash by his side to celebrate. It felt worse, wondering if the reason he won was because Cash wasn’t there. True, Cash and Wyatt had always jockeyed for first, but how could it be called a victory when his biggest competition was gone?

Pulling into the driveway in front of his new home, Wyatt felt like an imposter. All of this should have been Cash’s. The wife, the children, the fat check in his pocket. As he pulled up to the house, the police cruiser parked in front made his heart jump up to this throat.

What happened?

He got out of his truck as fast as he could and ran up the steps to the house as he prayed that everyone was okay.

Wyatt opened the door, and Laura was crying, talking to a sheriff’s deputy.

“Wyatt,” she said. “I’m glad you’re home.”

“What’s going on here?” he asked.

The deputy turned to look at Wyatt. “I’m here for a wellness check as well as to follow up on a complaint of abuse and neglect. I was led to believe there are two babies here in imminent danger.”

Wyatt stared at the deputy, then at Laura, before turning his attention back to the officer. “There must be some mistake. Laura is an amazing mom, and the boys are well taken care of.”

The deputy remained expressionless. “I’m just here to check on the babies. We were told the boys were left home alone without adequate supervision and that they were living in filth, which contributed to one of them becoming ill.” He looked down at his notes. “There was some concern that due to the child’s illness, there was risk of immediate harm.”

None of this sounded anything like Laura. Though Wyatt’s heart still thundered in his chest at having his family under attack like this, he felt slightly better knowing that this all had to be a terrible misunderstanding. Still, he sent a quick prayer that this would all be sorted out soon.

“This is definitely a mistake,” Wyatt said.

“I’m just trying to get to the bottom of this,” the deputy responded.
