Teachers’ self-perception and introspection are central for helping students to succeed academically. An important dimension of this philosophy is that of “knowing thyself.” Self-reflective teachers are better positioned to observe, understand, and develop tentative hypotheses about the academic and instructional needs of their students. Minimally, teachers should: (a) be familiar with their own learning and teaching styles; (b) be familiar with their strengths and shortcomings as an instructor, including, for example, subject matter knowledge, and an understanding about student learning and development; and (c) be familiar with their biases, stereotypes, and likes and dislikes about working with gifted students and culturally diverse students [Black boys].
