68. Indulging group antics

Sigh . why do some groups turn into packs of animals, ganging up on one person or excluding another? Why does the gossip have to start, judgments made over a bridesmaid whose suggestions are not trendy, whose shoes are not stylish? If you’ve mashed together disparate friends and relatives, immature ones at that, and group dynamics are veering into the “mean girls” category, put a stop to it now. You won’t entertain any rude comments about your friends, and while you can’t make them all become close, you will demand that they treat each other with respect. It’s a huge mistake for a bride or groom, whether out of surprise or shyness or wanting to fit in with their own clique, to allow or participate in any teasing or gossip or other harshness toward anyone in the bridal party or toward other friends or guests. You’re above it, so bring your group above it as well. This kind of game isn’t going to take place anywhere near your wedding.

DO: Talk directly with the mean girls, or with the guys who are mercilessly teasing one of the other guys. Let them know that you don’t appreciate the games, and if the games continue, there will be consequences.

DON’T: Tell the victim not to take it seriously. That friend didn’t sign up for this kind of treatment. Let her know that you’ve got her back.
