CAN YOU KNOW TOO MUCH?

It is one of life’s eternal mysteries: why does it get ever more difficult to recall the name of the person you were just introduced to? Surely it is a no-brainer that our cognitive powers fade as we grow older? Research seems to back this up: as we age, our scores in tests of cognitive ability decline.

Not so, according to some experts, who argue that this decline is actually down to the accumulation of a lifetime’s knowledge. According to them, our cognitive skills slow down with age not because the brain withers but because it is so full. This means that it takes longer to search the larger ‘mental dictionaries’ that older people have built up. Learning increases the amount of information that our brains have to process, and this inevitably affects performance in cognitive tests.
