Inside the Brain Box

What makes someone an expert?

One man set out to answer this question. The Swedish psychologist, Professor K. Anders Ericsson, wanted to discover what it takes to become truly successful in any given field. He conducted his research on violinists at the Berlin Music Academy and found that it takes roughly 10,000 hours to master a skill.

There are no naturals; it is purely about the work we put in.

Experience is everything. The more you do, the better you get. Start young. Work hard. Be focused. Avoid distractions. It won’t necessarily mean you’re happy, but if you want something badly enough, you need to work for it.

‘Mozart was not born an expert,’ Professor Ericsson wrote, ‘he became one!’ 10,000 hours is about four hours a day, five days a week, for ten years! Blimey!
