With conservative elements in China’s government opposing reform and the nation suffering from military cutbacks, archaic taxation systems, unequal trade agreements and humiliation at the hands of foreigners, the Boxers could not have found a more welcome place to form their movement if they had sent out applications.

The Boxers were an interesting group of rebels. Part rabble rousers and part zealots, the Boxers rose as a powerful threat to foreign influence in China, not to mention the foreigners themselves. A regional group of peasants opposed to Christian missionaries and even their fellow Chinese who had converted to Christianity, the Boxers feared the threats to the Chinese ways of life, and these peasants organized themselves to combat foreign intrusion. However, but just as quickly as they could rise up, they could disperse, leaving their government sponsors high and dry in the wake of more immediate needs.
