WHAT IS AUTOMATIC WRITING?

Have you ever doodled while talking on the phone? Most people would answer yes. When we do that, we are reacting unconsciously, unaware of what our hand is doing. Our conscious mind is occupied with the conversation we are having.

The process of psychography, a.k.a. automatic writing, works in a similar way.

During an automatic writing session, ideas and thoughts are believed to be telepathically communicated from a spirit through the writer onto the paper. This naturally makes it an interesting form of channeling.

It can be assumed that automatic writing has been around for as long as humans have been recording language, though there is no definitive origin story to be found. Automatic writing reached its peak in the nineteenth century during the height of spiritualism, and it is also still a popular choice for mediums today.

Some people don’t write during these sessions, but instead draw, sketch, or paint.

And while this practice comes naturally for some people, it is typically thought to be one of the more difficult methods of divination. Part of the reason for this is internal skepticism. It can be hard at first to determine whether you’re actually channeling from a spirit or if the words are coming from a higher version of yourself.
