Once the sexually dichromatic female and male have established their nesting territory, they must find a suitable mud or sand bank into which they can carve a brand new nest burrow each season. Both sexes assist in nest excavation, using their beaks to break into the soil, and their partially fused front toes to shovel the sand behind them to dig deeper into the bank.

The egg of the Green Kingfisher is pale white in color, immaculate, and 1 x ¾ in (24 x 19 mm) in size. Both parents keep the eggs warm, the female typically taking the night shift as well as several daytime shifts.
