Since he wasn’t making solid chocolate bars that would compete with their products, and he had been a good employee, Hershey and Murrie were happy to help H.B. out. They extended credit to Reese, and gave him free sugar when times were tough. When he set up a small factory in the town—employing many of his children—they even let him advertise his chocolates as being “manufactured in Hershey,” a tagline that helped establish Reese’s credibility.

Despite chocolate shortages, Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups were sold throughout the course of World War II. But the price eventually doubled from a penny to two cents.
