Whip and tongue grafting Using only dormant scions, cut pencil-thick branches about three inches (75mm) long with two to three buds. Cut a diagonal splice about one inch (25mm) at the base with a reverse splice cut in its centre to form a ‘tongue’ and do the same on the rootstock which should just be emerging from dormancy. The best time to make grafts is usually in late winter.

Ideally the scion and stock should be as equal in thickness as possible. If there is a mismatch, make sure that the cambium on both scion and stock come into contact at some point or there will be no hope of the graft taking. Press the scion onto the stock, making sure the tongues interlink, and tie firmly with ribbons of polythene or rubber bands. Try to perform the operation as quickly as possible as the cut ends can soon dry out. Place in a humid environment and provide bottom heat if possible. As soon as signs of growth begin, gradually harden off and remove to a well-ventilated position. Rub off any buds or shoots that grow from the rootstock. The rootstock should be of a similar species to the scion and as closely matched in character as possible. As always, there are exceptions to the rule. For instance, pears are often grafted onto quince stocks.
