Ruth saved bed 6, with its permanent shade structure, for small, tender succulents that prefer filtered light to full sun.

Ruth’s favorite way to plant these succulents was to create arrangements—sometimes large paisley swathes—that showed off the varying colors and forms of these small fleshy-leaved succulents. These tapestries offer bold drama at the ground level, with some aeoniums for added height, making them a great choice for the front of borders, closest to paving or pathways. Most of these small plants appreciate protection from sun and cold, so they also do great in pots that can be moved to a warmer spot, if needed, or a location with dappled shade. When mass planting a large group of low growers, adding slight topography to the bed will give it more visual interest. This technique is shown off in bed 6, which is a large, arching bed with plenty of undulating rocks. The permanent overhang provides dappled light in summer, and when used to support plastic, it becomes a walk-in hoop house in winter.
