The following night, Kristian, CC, and I sat at the conference table at the office around nine p.m., eating the Chinese food we’d ordered for dinner. We would start things in the early evening and work until the next morning, because the production offices weren’t crowded then with corporate clients and deliverymen and people who were not working on the film. Plus, the three of us, and Marc also, all seemed to be night owls anyway.

And for some reason it seemed easier to tell my stories at night. My mind had begun to process all of the footage and memories that CC and I’d discussed the night before. And I was feeling both terrible and reflective at the same time.

“You know, I can remember almost the exact moment I became a veteran. I can remember exactly how I felt when the reality of what war is…just seemed to envelop me. Like you could feel the kick. It was weird. And what’s even weirder is that it’s in the footage. I captured that moment on video.”

Kristian, eating his steamed chicken and broccoli with brown rice, paused for a second, and looked over at CC.

“Let’s take a look at that footage once we’re done eating.”

So a few minutes later, the three of us sat in the editing suite and scrolled through the video. As I watched my memories flash by on the screen, I saw the faces of guys I knew who’d been wounded after I took the video.

It felt strange to watch them because in the footage they had no idea what was going to happen to them. It felt like I was looking at something that I wasn’t supposed to be looking at.

“Here it is. This is the scene,” I said. Then the three of us sat and watched, and I narrated as CC typed.
