Part 6: Zelenskyy and Foreign Relations

“And we have not even thought about it for a second. Just like many other cities, and communities in our beautiful country, which found themselves in the worst World War II.”

-Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Many Ukrainian presidents in the past did not participate fully in foreign relations since they wanted to keep close ties to Russia and make sure there was no tension. Zelenskyy wanted Ukraine to be on the world stage though and made sure he took official trips abroad to make sure he was meeting with other leaders.

Zelenskyy’s first official trip was to Brussels in June 2019. He met with European leaders and NATO officials during this trip to discuss the process of Ukraine being able to join both. Shortly after this meeting, Zelenskyy said he would lift the moratorium on exhuming Polish mass graves in Ukraine.

The Ukrainian administration before Zelenskyy had banned Poland from carrying out exhumations of Polish victims that were part of the Volhynian massacres.

In September 2019, Zelenskyy reportedly had some trouble with US relations because then president Donald Trump blocked a congressionally mandated military aid package to Ukraine that was $400 million. Trump wanted to put pressure on Zelenskyy to talk about Joe Biden and his son Hunter Biden because the son had taken a position on the board of directors for Burisma Holdings, which is a Ukrainian gas company.

This report was highly criticized and many people said that Trump did not have the right to block the aid package since Congress already passed it and it was mandated. This also started the Trump-Ukraine scandal and was the starting event for the United States Congress to start their impeachment process against Donald Trump.

Zelenskyy denied though that he received any pressure from Trump to give up information about Hunter Biden. He also said he does not want to interfere with foreign elections or affect the US elections in any way.

Zelenskyy visited the United States in September of 2021 when he met with US president Joe Biden and many other people including the Secretary of State, the Secretary of Defense, and the Secretary of Energy. Zelenskyy and his wife also took part in the opening of the Ukrainian House in Washington DC during the same trip.

He also met with Apple CEO Tim Cook during this time and with some Ukrainians living in the United States that have senior positions at some of the Silicon Valley tech companies. He also made a speech and met with students at Stanford University.

While he was in the United States, there was an assignation attempt on Zelenskyy’s right hand man, Serhiy Shefir. He was not harmed, but his driver was in the hospital for several weeks with three gunshot wounds.
