Chapter 16

As Trevor drove, Carrie marveled at the panoramic views of the countryside. She had to admit the wide open spaces were growing on her.

Texas was so different from California. The sky was bluer, the air fresher, the grass greener. Instead of being stacked on top of each other, the houses had sprawling footprints and plenty of privacy.

Here, there was room to move, to breathe, to think, to wonder. The serenity of it all made her relax a little and let her guard down.

“Penny for your thoughts,” Trevor said.

Carrie smiled. “I was just enjoying the scenery. I’m a city girl at heart, but I think I could get used to living in Texas. It’s peaceful.”

“Can’t argue with that.”

“This probably sounds silly, but everything here seems larger than life.”

Trevor laughed. “Like I said, darlin’, everything’s bigger in Texas.”

She laughed with him. “I’m starting to see that for myself.”

Trevor slowed the truck and pulled into a gravel parking lot. Set back from the road was single story bar and grill. The place looked like a dive.

“Hank’s Honkytonk. Really, Trevor?” The blinking neon sign with several burned out letters did nothing to class the place up. “This is where you’re taking me to dinner?”

His mischievous grin was contagious. “I’ll have you know that Hank’s makes the best burgers this side of Houston.”

She didn’t doubt him. Based on the number of vehicles in the parking lot, the place was popular. Maybe too popular.

“I thought we would go someplace quiet to celebrate and plan our next steps,” Carrie said.

“I thought we should put business aside for the night and have a little fun,” Trevor countered as he parked the truck and they got out. “Let’s go.”

Trevor grabbed Carrie’s hand and half-dragged her across the gravel and through the door of the packed bar and grill. It took her eyes a few moments to fully adjust to the dim lighting. When they did, she realized that nearly every patron in the place was looking at her and Trevor.

A trim middle-aged woman wearing Wrangler jeans, a western-style shirt, and cowboy boots came out from behind the bar. “Trevor Jantz, is that you? It’s been too long since we’ve seen you ‘round here. I swear you get better lookin’ with every passin’ year!”

“Good to see you, Hank.” Trevor said as he entered the woman’s warm embrace. “You’re looking mighty fine yourself.”

“Oh, you.” She playfully swatted his shoulder. “Heard there was construction happenin’ in your neck of the woods. Does that mean you’re gonna stay a while this time?”

“Maybe. Depends on what happens in New York next week.”

“You’re going to New York?” a surprised Carrie blurted out.

“We’re going to New York,” Trevor corrected. “Did I forget to mention that?”

The muscles of Carrie’s jaw twitched. “Looks that way.”

“Trevor, where are your manners?” Hank said with her hands on her hips. “Aren’t you gonna introduce me to your lady friend?”

“Carrie, I’d like you to meet Henrietta ‘Hank’ Davidson. She’s the owner of this fine establishment. Hank, meet Carrie Carlson.”

Carrie leaned in to shake Hank’s hand.
