Chapter 12

Susan and Angela giggled together as they walked down the path toward the inlet that would show the manta rays feeding, while the rest of the group followed a short distance behind. A charged excitement ran through the camp, and Erin couldn’t help the giddy feeling at being able to witness the spectacle again. It was one of the perks of coming to this island. The plankton were in abundance in the small bay, and that attracted many different varieties of sea life. One of the most majestic that chose this feeding ground was the large manta rays.

She had no idea how the large spotlight came to be on the island, but when it was flipped on in the dark, pointed towards the water, they were able to see something that not many people got to witness.

“Are you excited?” Blake asked Erin as they neared the water.

“I just hope they will be out tonight.”

He chuckled at her reluctance. “They will be. It’s the right time of year.”

She nodded, turning her smile to Cooper as he commented. “This is something we won’t soon forget then. I’m glad I will be able to witness it with you.”

She tried to give Cooper a neutral stare, but her excitement for the outing overrode any other feelings she tried to control.

Blake didn’t even seem to mind that Cooper was flirting with her. She relaxed as they stepped up to the platform.

Devlin was already checking the equipment, getting it ready with a flashlight in hand. When everyone was looking into the water, he flipped on the spotlight. Instantly, the whole area was covered in light. Gasps erupted from the group as the darkness disappeared.

He adjusted it down into the water, showing a spectacular show that buzzed just below the surface. Erin sat on the dock, dangling her feet near the water. They were far enough above that her feet didn’t dip in the water, giving her a perfect view of the show they were about to get.

Cooper slid next to her. She was grateful it wasn’t Blake that had decided to sit by her. Angela and Susan sat on the opposite side of the spotlight, with Blake sitting next to Angela, giving himself more space than Cooper had.

Erin brought her attention to the water when the other women screamed their excitement. A manta ray gracefully swam through the water with its wings spread and its mouth open, catching the plankton as it glided through the open waters. As it dipped below the water, escaping from view, another one took its place. The same graceful movements caught her attention as a smaller one swam in between the large one. Erin’s heart fluttered as she witnessed the spectacle.

She turned her head to the sound of Cooper’s soft voice whispering, beautiful under his breath. She widened her eyes as she noticed he wasn’t staring at the water. His gaze was fixed on her. A blush rose to her cheeks at his focus. She hadn’t received so much attention in years, and a small part of her warmed at the thought.
