Chapter 12
Zoe
Our final days on the cruise liner passed in a blur of activities spent with Adam and Abby. After my altercation with Elaina, Adam decided that we would spend minimal time separated so that Elaina couldnât corner us. In the evenings, we mainly dined inside our room, by ordering in and only ventured to the âsafeâ family friendly restaurants that Elaina wouldnât want to go to.
Adam would invite his friends to join us and we would normally all end up back at Adamâs suite either playing games or watching movies. It felt that I had become an honorary member of the group and they had all eventually warmed up to me. Even Silas and Zach, who had originally doubted me, now happily talked openly with me. I felt welcome and part of the group which was more than a great feeling.
Abby was loving all the extra time she was having with her father. Most of our day would be spent down by the Kids Zone where she would occupy herself on the bouncy castles, slides, and the large swimming pool. We had become our own family unit in the space of a couple of days.
âZoe, can we go on the surfboard today?â Abby jumped up onto my lap as I read a magazine on the sofa.
âSurfboard?â I looked at her puzzled, wondering if she was confused about going to the beach.
âYeah. Up on the top deck they have a surfboard that you can ride. If you fall off, you fall into the pool. It looks like fun.â She picked up a piece of my hair and twiddled it in her fingers.
âOh, the simulator. I donât know honey. Youâll have to ask your dad.â Just as I answered, Adam came walking out of his bedroom.
âDaddy, can we go on the surfboard today?â Adam turned and gave the same confused look that I had made only a moment earlier.
âThereâs a simulator up on the top deck.â I filled in the missing bit of information.
âUm, I donât know, Abby. Donât you want to go down to the Kids Zone like we normally do?â I could see Adam was concerned about going somewhere so open in case we bumped into Elaina.
âNo, I want to go on the surfboard. Iâm bored with staying in the Kids Zone.â Abby looked at her father with wide eyes.
âIâm not sure if youâre old enough to go on the simulator. It might be just for big kids.â Adam stood with his hands on his waist as he thought about it, but I knew he was fighting a losing battle.
âOh please, Daddy. This is our last day and I really want to go on the surfboard before we go.â Abby gave her best sad face, but it was obvious that sheâd already won Adam over.
âWell, I guess as itâs our last day it would be fun to do something different.â Abby jumped up and down, excited. âZoe, do you want to skip this and chill out here? Or you could soak in the tub in your room.
