Where They Went

The jaekelopterus lived during the Permian period, when all the continents were connected and surrounded by one humongous ocean called Panthalassa. Something dramatic happened about 250 million years ago that practically wiped the living organism slate clean, killing off 95 percent of all marine and aquatic animals and marking the end for more than 70 percent of all land beasts. It was the largest extinction event known to science. Thousands of volcanoes on land and under the sea erupted serially, coating vast areas with lava and eventually causing the planet’s temperature to rise by five degrees. It took thirty million years for ecosystems to recover from this shock.

The jaekelopterus was nicknamed the “sea scorpion” because its segmented body was similar to a scorpion’s. It was a voracious eater, sucking up all living things in its path.
