With this prior teaching in mind, it becomes evident that when Jesus says “Use your worldly wealth to make friends,” he’s not talking about simply swapping favors with your buddies or going out to lunch after church with your usual crew. It’s not wining and dining your man crush in hopes he’ll decide you’re awesome and invite you to join him at CrossFit. As Jesus points out elsewhere, loving those who love you, doing good to those who do good to you, might feel all warm and fuzzy, but it’s not particularly to your credit (Luke 7:32-34). Even mafia dons and dictators do that, and sleep well at night. The people Jesus has in mind are given a particular definition—the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, those who cannot repay you or return the favor. These, Jesus says, whose worth has thus far been overlooked by the world, are the ones whose relationship will prove priceless.

Note that Jesus speaks of actual friendship, not just charity donation slips. He’s very much talking about money, but he’s also talking about something so much bigger. He’s talking about life lived, and money spent, in ways that totally transform the whole field of our social connections and deepest relational investments.

Jesus has bypassed the usual religious guilt and obligation to open a conversation on money that begins with a whole different premise: spend smart. “Be shrewd investors,” he says. “Seize the moment while you have it to convert your currency. Whatever resources you invest, many or few, spend them investing in the only stock that’s rising: relationship—especially, especially with those less privileged than you. If you do, when the money’s gone, there’ll be a line at heaven’s gates, waiting to welcome you home, and God will be eager to entrust you with more—true riches of a kind you haven’t even dreamed of yet.”
