Chapter 14

Common Beauty Questions Answered and Myths Debunked!

The world of beauty can indeed be beautiful. All too often, however, the information you get is anything but beautiful; actually, it can be downright ugly! Sometimes the advertising and sales pitches you read and hear are minor distortions of facts or merely deceptive; in other cases, they are out-and-out lies (and those really get us worked up!). Whether the information comes from a cosmetics company, aesthetician, advertisement, physician, or from a well-intentioned website, we spend a lot of time untangling the senseless information to help you get to the truth.

In this chapter, we bust the most popular beauty myths (some are outright concocted stories) that many unsuspecting people believe. We give you the facts behind the industry hype so you can make the best decision for your skin.

If I Can’t See Irritation on My Skin, There’s Nothing to Worry About, Right?

Any and all types of irritation, whether you see it on the surface of your skin or not, triggers inflammation and, as a result, is terrible for your skin, impairing healing, damaging collagen, and depleting the vital substances your skin needs to stay young and healthy.

Avoiding such things as hot water, harsh scrubs, sun exposure, and products with irritating ingredients (especially fragrance, whether synthetic or natural) will help save your skin. When it comes to skin, it’s best to eliminate, as much as possible, the use of known skin irritants, especially when there are brilliant formulas available that do not include these problematic ingredients. Knowing this, it simply doesn’t make sense to take the risk. [2,5]

Do I Really Need a Product Labeled “Eye Cream”?

All of the marketing hype you’ve heard about how eye creams are specially formulated for the sensitive, thin skin around the eyes, and that they can get rid of puffy eyes, dark circles, and sagging skin is, for the most part, simply not true. In fact, most of us don’t need a product labeled eye cream (or eye gel or eye serum). The perfect “eye treatment” is likely already in your beauty routine; your facial moisturizer or serum can provide the same anti-aging and reparative benefits when applied around your eyes!

Most eye creams are not specially formulated, nor do they contain any unique ingredients that distinguish them from the ingredients in facial formulas. In fact, it takes only a quick look at the ingredient list of the majority of eye creams to see that their ingredients don’t differ in any significant way from the ingredients of comparable facial moisturizers.

Also important to note: Most eye creams don’t contain sunscreen, which means that during the daytime you’re leaving the already wrinkle-prone eye area vulnerable to sun damage, which causes eye-area sagging, darkening, and yellowing, and can worsen puffiness. So, if you’re using an eye cream, you should be applying a sunscreen rated SPF 30 or greater over it.

Very few studies identify any specific ingredients or combination of ingredients that the eye area needs (or should avoid) that are different from those that the skin on other areas of the face needs or doesn’t need.
