60: TRACKING BEHAVIOUR DATA

Tracking information and data regarding behaviour can serve as a double-edged sword. Schools should be wary of tracking data as a means of bringing, for example, suspension or detention data sets down just because a table says a lot of suspensions or detentions have occurred. When schools seek to reduce the number of suspensions or detentions issued, then one should question why. Are they doing this because they think Ofsted will like it? Is it to appease a local authority who are challenging schools over the number of suspensions/exclusions that have been issued? Is there an attempt to create a false sense that behaviour is better than it is? What behaviours are being ignored and what impact is this having on teachers, pupils and lesson delivery? Data should inform where there are behavioural issues in a school and where support, input and training are required. It should also be used to proactively pre-empt issues. For example, if you know that Year 9 on a Friday period 5 are an issue for a particular subject area/teacher, then what will you proactively do, using this localised knowledge, to intervene and support?
