JULY

Summer Is Here

Even in cool growing regions, warm sun and dry days have arrived by July—unless you garden in the NE or SE, where high temperatures are accompanied by muggy conditions. Everywhere else it’s just plain hot. All you want to do is relax in the shade and reward your efforts thus far with an icy beverage while sampling your harvest. But before you get too settled on that comfy chaise, it’s time to dust off your watering skills. With few exceptions, edible plants are not drought tolerant. Once you understand that ripe fruits and leafy vegetables are 80 to 95 percent water, it’s easier to appreciate the importance of proper irrigation for the best flavor and nutrition. In addition to keeping the garden watered, now is the time to begin plotting the fall and winter garden. Juggling this climactic contradiction is a small price to pay for a continued harvest in the coming months.
