2. Correct apparent errors in the score.

Another maxim is

3. Make sure that the most important voice or voices can be heard.

Thus, when I am asked to play softer in measure io so I don't cover the second violin, an appropriate (though possibly incorrect) response is that my part is more important-I am implicitly accepting the maxim but objecting to its application in this particular case. I may also say that I was not covering the second violin part-again, accepting the maxim but now denying on more subjective grounds that it applies in this case. Or I may point out that my part is marked forte while the second violin part is marked mezzo forte-in this case, I am appealing to the priority of maxim i.

The response may be that the second violin part has to be heard because it continues the melodic line; if I yield at this point it is because we have implicitly agreed to a higher ranking in this case for maxim 3. On the other hand, a closer look at the score may indicate the possibility of a miscalculation on Beethoven's part-it may appear that a mezzo forte was left out of the cello part accidentally. In that case we have tacitly applied maxim 2.
