Theory B – what is actually wrong in a situation

Take a moment to distinguish between the two as it is important to understand the difference.

Let’s look at the example below to help:

Situation: Unloading dishwasher

Theory A: (what OCD tells you): My problem is that there may be dishwasher tablet residue left on the dishes and I may poison my family.

Theory B: My problem is that I have OCD so even though I am a very careful person I am terrified about harming my family, and this causes me to worry about the dishwasher. The problem is not that the dishwasher is dangerous, the problem is that OCD tells me that it is and causes me anxiety.

Can you spot the distinction? It is not the dishwasher itself that causes any kind of problem, rather it is the worry that you have because you do not wish to harm your family. By recognizing the difference between the two theories, you will be able to challenge the ideas that are underlying some of your biggest OCD beliefs, and as such reduce your anxiety.

HOW DO I CHALLENGE THEORY A?

The most important step in challenging Theory A is to accept that your OCD might be wrong. As OCD presents ideas to us as absolute facts and we immediately react with anxiety, we never stop to think or challenge the OCD. So therefore the first step is to notice when OCD is giving you an interpretation of the situation and stop to think.
