Vomit smelling fruit

by Kevin

Many people know this tree by its most infamous feature: the disgusting, strong-odored, inedible fruit. Once I was picking them up from a street tree in Berkeley, and the garbage man came by to pick up the weekly trash. He asked what I was doing and told me about how he and his high school friends got back at their enemies by putting ginkgo fruit under the seats of their enemies’ cars. Yuck! That very day, I picked up a tremendous amount of ginkgo nuts and put them in the floor of the passenger side of my truck. They were double-bagged, but somehow the bags leaked, and the juices from the very ripe ginkgo fruit leaked out a bit onto the floor. My truck smelled like old vomit for months! Never make this mistake when harvesting ginkgo, and always use gloves!

The foul-smelling and messy fruit has prompted cities such as Berkeley to try to pass ordinances to cut down all female ginkgo trees. Many– outraged by the idea of cutting down beautiful mature trees that make a delicious gourmet nut– tried to stop the ordinance. I still do not know whether or not the ordinance passed.
