Note: If using a candle don’t hold the tube above the flame as it’ll get sooty and gray – hold it beside the candle. I prefer to use an iron as it’s usually already on and I don’t like the idea of a burning candle in my sewing room! Heat guns can be used but some are too hot and the tip almost liquefies and is ruined.

10. Lacing a Corset

It may be surprising to discover that there are a few ways to lace a corset, and that how it’s done may affect the placement of your grommets. Most corsets throughout time have been laced up the center back and that’s what will be described here. You can apply these principles to lacing anywhere on any garment.

Before choosing a lacing technique you may ask, “Do I start lacing from the top or from the bottom?” The answer is – “That depends.” I’ve heard a theory that the Elizabethans laced from the top down to attain a flatter chest. And other periods increased the height of the chest by lacing from the bottom up. I lace all of my corsets from the top down as this allows me to tuck the ends of the cord out of sight (up inside the bottom edge of my corset) and it’s easier if I have to dress myself.

Single Cord Lacing

This uses a single cord with one end anchored to the corset and the other end threading through the grommets/eyelets. This form of lacing seems to be referred to in earlier corsets up to the Regency period. I’ve read and heard that some people consider it an easier lacing technique for anyone who is dressing themselves, but my experience is contrary to this. I’ve made only one corset with this form of lacing as I found it to be exceptionally awkward – even when lacing it up on a dress form.
