8.1 The Babylonian Empire

The Assyrian policy of importing non-Israelites who did not know or worship the Lord complicated life in the old northern kingdom (2 Kings 17:24). These new arrivals brought their pagan deities into this sacred space that was to host the plan of salvation. Consequently, the Lord made his displeasure known through lion attacks. Lions were prevalent in open country but not in towns and cities, so when the Lord “sent lions among them” (2 Kings 17:26), this motivated Assyria to return some of the Israelite deportees to the promised land “to teach the people what the god of the land requires” (2 Kings 17:27). But rather than correcting the false ideas of the transplanted non-Israelites, the returning exiles intermarried with them and produced a society that was blended both ethnically and theologically into a group known as the Samaritans (2 Kings 17:24–40).

The exiles of the southern kingdom were also scattered across a broad landscape. Some fled the Babylonian onslaught by seeking asylum in Ammon, Moab, and Edom, as well as in the Egyptian cities of Migdol, Noph (Memphis), Tahpanes, and Elephantine (see map 8.1; 2 Kings 25:26; Jer. 40:11; 43:7; 44:1). In addition, the Babylonians forcibly moved Judeans and resettled them in a variety of locations (see map 8.3). The Bible references to this deportation include many more place names than we can map with confidence (2 Chron. 36:20; Ezra 2:59; Ezek. 1:1–3; 3:15; Dan. 1:1–5). Generally speaking, these Judeans were resettled along the Kebar River southeast of the city of Babylon.
