The Unloading Area
Dealing with your honey house begins before you get inside. What sort of unloading area do you have? Leaving supers stacked in the back of the truck in the driveway doesn’t work because soon you will have every honey bee in the county examining them for any nook or cranny or spilled drop of honey they can rob and take home. If they find some, and they probably will, they will be back—with friends—and soon you will have a melee in your driveway that you, your neighbors, and your family do not want to contend with. So as soon as you arrive, you need to unload the supers and get them inside.
Carrying the supers from here to there is the least expensive, and hardest, to do. A simple two-wheeled cart is fast, inexpensive, and labor intensive. Specialized two-wheelers are available that fit a single colony pallet/drip board—forklift style—and work well for this. Motorized two-wheeled carts work better if you have some distance to move supers, and you can find or make one. Moving up, there are pallet movers and forklifts, if your operation warrants this scale of equipment.
A loading dock arrangement is ideal, where the floor of the honey house is level with the back of your truck, so you simply unload on one level. The unloading dock may be constructed below grade, so it is on an incline, or the honey house floor may be a raise above grade.
Some use manual conveyers to move supers from the back of the truck to inside. These are commonly used in grocery stores and warehouses; when available, used models can usually be picked up for a song. They save an awful lot of lifting.
