DYING AND BURNISHING EDGES

Nicely finished edges make a huge difference to the look, feel and longevity of a leather item. They should be rounded and smooth to the touch, not ‘mushroomed’, and add to the visual appeal of the finished product, with a complimentary, consistent colour and an equally consistent texture throughout. The technique required to achieve this will vary depending on the leather you are working with. If it is possible (as it is with items made of firm veg tan, such as belts), dye and burnish your edges before you stitch. If you stitch first, you may make areas of the work inaccessible, for instance, where a buckle is stitched in. You also risk getting the stitching dirty, creating an issue that will be impossible to remedy and will spoil the finished item.
