FUN FACT American witch hazel (H. virginiana) blooms in the fall, while vernal witch hazel blooms in late winter, and Asian varieties flower in the early spring!

A decoction of the bark and twigs of H. virginiana is quite beneficial as a facial cleanser due to its astringent and antibacterial qualities, and it is also known to be effective for acne, sunburn, insect bites, and bruising. After childbirth, many women use witch hazel-infused topical wipes for the herb’s cooling and healing effect.

Commercial pharmacies offer a witch hazel product that is typically steam distilled from the bark of the shrub. This distillate is then combined with isopropyl alcohol as a preservative. The final product is significantly lower in tannins and other beneficial constituents when compared to a home-brewed witch hazel decoction. The leaves and twigs of witch hazel can also be tinctured at home and used in much the same way as its commercial counterpart, including as a spot treatment for acne and in a formula to promote oral health.
