Soft Pastel

The French Impressionists were a group of friends in Paris who often painted together and had a similar style. One of them, Edgar Degas, a sculptor and painter, preferred to use soft pastels. He sometimes drew young ballerinas in relaxed positions, such as when they were putting on their ballet shoes before going onstage to perform. Soft pastels are applied by applying the darkest colors first, then gradually applying lighter colors. They can be blended with a finger, brush, or tissue.
